The South Dakota State Employee Health plan will again offer free seasonal flu vaccinations at designated State sponsored locations. Flu vaccinations are the best way to protect yourself from flu, by getting immunized you are also protecting more vulnerable individuals such as infants and the elderly who are very susceptible to serious illness from influenza.
Flu Vaccinations are offered to the following groups covered by the health plan:
- COBRA participants and their insured spouses,
- Retirees under 65 and their insured spouses under age 65, and
- Dependent children (of any age).
Bring your State Health Insurance ID card with you.
Before attending a flu clinic, all members should review the HIPAA Notice of Privacy Act, individuals may request a hard copy with the Department of Health by calling 605.773.3361. To view the Notice of Privacy Act, click here.
High Risk Criteria
All members meeting the following high-risk criteria may receive the flu vaccine in mid-October. Please call your local Community Health Services Office to arrange an appointment to receive your flu shot.
High-risk Criteria:
- persons aged 50 years of age or older
- persons aged 2-64 years with long term health problems such as: heart disease, kidney disease, lung diseases like asthma; metabolic diseases like diabetes; blood disorders like anemia; a weakened immune system caused by cancer or cancer treatment, HIV/AIDS, or steroid therapy; or certain conditions such as neuromuscular disorders that can cause breathing problems
- children age 6 to 59 months
- pregnant women
- healthcare workers
- persons who live or care for persons at high risk
